Bracelet with double rows of braided hair, centered on a rec - Lot 25
Bracelet with double rows of braided hair, centered on a rectangular motif in finely chased 18K (750/1000) yellow gold, adorned with initials (slight indentation on back). Ratchet clasp also in 18K (750/1000) gold. Traces of glue on one end. Nineteenth-century work. Length: approx. 19 cm Gross weight : 6,4 g Hair jewelry, very much in vogue in the 19th century, was made from braided or woven human hair. They took the form of bracelets, necklaces, brooches or medallions, often set in gold or brass. Initially used as mourning jewelry to preserve a memento of the deceased, they also became tokens of friendship or love. Their manufacture required great dexterity and craftsmanship. These jewels, both intimate and symbolic, reflect an era when feelings and memories were expressed through objects. Consultant : Margaux Serrano
