Kees van Dongen (1877-1968) was a Franco-Dutch painter and printmaker, famous for his vibrant fauve palette and his portraits of high society, artists and women. Born in Delfshaven, Rotterdam, van Dongen studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam before moving to Paris in 1897. There, he became close to the Fauve movement, a group of artists including Henri Matisse and André Derain, known for their bold, non-naturalistic colors and expressive pictorial work.
Van Dongen's works combine vivid colors, dynamic compositions and a playful, often satirical take on contemporary society. He explored the personalities and glamour of Parisian life, while experimenting with abstraction and decorative design. His art evolved over the decades, from early Fauvist portraits to more stylized and sensual works, emphasizing elegance, color and modernity.
Among his major exhibitions:
- Kees van Dongen: Maître fauve et moderniste at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris - featuring essential Fauvist works and portraits.
- Kees van Dongen: Les années parisiennes at the Centre Pompidou, Paris - tracing his beginnings and involvement with avant-garde circles.
- Kees van Dongen: Portraits and Prints at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon - highlighting his graphic works and lithographs.
- Kees van Dongen: International retrospective at the Kunsthalle Hamburg - presenting a complete panorama of his work, including paintings, prints and drawings.
- Kees van Dongen at the Musée Jacquemart-André, Paris - devoted to social portraits and chromatic experiments.
Van Dongen is recognized as a major figure of Fauvism and a chronicler of Parisian life, famous for his striking use of color and his unique style, combining elegance, humor and social observation.
"Woman on the Beach, Trouville (1966)" is a color lithograph by Kees van Dongen, capturing a peaceful scene on the beaches of Trouville, Normandy. The work perfectly illustrates his characteristic style: bold, vivid hues, fluid contours and an expressive depiction of the female body. The posture of the figure, combined with the bright color palette, conveys an impression of relaxation, elegance and playful sophistication.
This lithograph was produced at the prestigious Mourlot workshops in Paris and is part of a limited edition, hand-signed and numbered by van Dongen. The work was also used as a poster for the Salons de l'Hôtel de Ville in Trouville-sur-Mer, testifying to van Dongen's enduring bond with the region.
"Woman on the Beach, Trouville" embodies van Dongen's mastery of printmaking, capturing the dynamism of modern life and his ability to convey character and atmosphere through a combination of color, line and composition.
